Insider Insight: How to design a small patio space

We consulted a range of design experts to curate these small patio ideas that are perfect for every space, from backyard patios and balconies to alfresco dining spaces and more.

Focus on the essentials

Every inch matters when designing a small outdoor area, so consider only adding essential items to the space, like a seating area and a side table or two.

“This (pictured above) is not a large patio, but it has everything needed for a garden oasis,” says Pamela O’Brien of Pamela Hope Interiors. “There is a table for dining, a small lounge area, a grill, and a tea cart that holds plants and garden tools.” In other words, this outdoor space sticks to essential items that homeowners are likely to use regularly while enjoying it.

Define the space with an outdoor rug

Area rugs have a special knack for adding color, definition, and texture to a space, and they don’t take away livable square footage, so they’re a no-brainer for punching up a small patio design.

“Most people focus on furniture, but floor space can be an important part of creating a cohesive outdoor area,” says Karen Rohr, interior designer at Mackenzie Collier Interiors. “One way to add personality to your patio area is to add an outdoor area rug.” Add an outdoor rug beneath a dining or seating area to help define these spaces. You can also layer area rugs on top of one another to incorporate more cozy texture.
