14 Mid-century modern dining room ideas from interior design experts

Dining rooms. While they’re a staple space for friends and family to gather at dinner parties or throughout the holidays, they’re often left to the wayside the rest of the year in lieu of more convenient spaces like the kitchen table or breakfast nook. Because of this, it’s common for dining rooms to be the last space in the home to furnish.

Insider Insight: How to use an ottoman

The ottoman is as versatile as it is functional. Learn more from the experts about how to use this piece of furniture.

Create additional seating space

Many turn to ottomans to provide additional seating for guests. One such person is Jennifer Davis, founder of Davis Interiors, who uses ottomans to add extra seating in compact spaces, such as near the fireplace or discreetly tucked under a console table. “With its versatility and hint of charm, it is also ideal for introducing more pattern, color, or texture into any design concept,” says Davis.

James Stanley, principal designer at achitectural design firm, James Stanley NY, agrees, and says that his “favorite place to use an ottoman, especially a larger ottoman or a square one, is the living or family room. Right in-front of the seating area. It doubles as a coffee table, seating area, and footrest. Talk about Form and Function meeting beautifully.” Stanley says that the style of the ottoman doesn’t have to match your seating. In fact, choosing an ottoman with a finish or fabric that’s complementary to the rest of your seating options is a great way to inject personality into your living space.

Hide away the clutter

A favorite of small space dwellers, storage ottomans have extra storage space built into the piece, usually in the form of an upholstered top that lifts up to reveal a hidden cavity. James Stanley uses this sneaky storage option to keep his remote controls, seasonal throws, pillows, and magazines out of sight.

Meet & Greet: Three questions with Nidhi Kapur, founder of Maiden Home

Q: What inspired you to start Maiden Home?

Nidhi Kapur: The idea for Maiden Home began when designing my first family home in New York City. I wanted to create a space that felt design-forward and true to my style without sacrificing quality. In my search for timeless pieces, it was frustrating to find that my options were either generic designs from big-box retailers or designer finds that felt inaccessible. I decided to go straight to the source: North Carolina, where family-owned workshops have been creating custom pieces for generations. I was inspired to find a way to create custom, design-forward pieces with this level of quality and craft, and be able to shop them in a modern way.

How does Maiden Home deliver high-quality furniture at a more affordable price than designer brands?

Nidhi Kapur: Our team is committed to delivering our customers the best value in luxury furniture, hands down. All of our pieces are designed in our New York studio, and then made to order, eliminating the need for warehouses and showrooms. These rent and inventory costs are major expenses for traditional retailers, which ultimately get passed to the consumer in the form of markups. Instead, our business model allows Maiden Home to invest where it matters most to the customer—in our products —so we can offer truly unmatched quality without the inflated price tag.

How would you sum up the mission behind Maiden Home?

Nidhi Kapur: Our mission is to offer design-forward, comfort-driven pieces custom made to last—pairing the heritage craftsmanship of our artisan partners with our distinctive designs for the modern home. Core to everything we do is a relentless focus on quality, respect for craftsmanship, and deep commitment to our customer.
