Handmade is the biggest furniture story of 2026, and "well made" now sits on every product page. But two sofas can look identical in a photo and one's lumpy in three years. The gap is almost never the sewing — it's the materials.

Start with the fabric

(the part you touch every day and never think to check)

Double rubs — the durability number. 15,000+ for everyday use, 30,000+ if you've got kids or pets. Cheap sofas won't even list it.
Natural fibers (linen, wool, top-grain leather) age beautifully — leather even patinas. Bonded leather peels and cracks; skip it.
Performance weaves (polyester, olefin) trade a little character for near-stainproof durability.
Tells of good work: tight even weave, clean stitching (no puckering), snug welt cording.

Pro tip: "Take the swatch into the room with the natural light — look at it with your floor color and the other colors in the room." Most quality brands mail free swatches. Use them.

Quality vs. cheap, under the hood

Frame — Cheap: softwood/particleboard, stapled. Quality: kiln-dried hardwood, corner blocks glued and screwed. (Test: lift one front leg 6"; it should rise without twisting.) Springs — Cheap: elastic webbing that sags. Quality: eight-way hand-tied, or sinuous "no-sag" springs. Cushions — Cheap: loose polyfill that goes lumpy. Quality: high-resilience foam (1.8+ lb/ft³), ideally down-wrapped. (Press it — it should bounce back.)
